Let the packing begin!

18 days until I leave for Virginia!

I officially started packing today. I have thought long and hard about how to pack for 2 years. I have come to the conclusion that with or without stuff, I will be just fine. This way of thinking has lifted the stress of forgetting something. I will just do what the Macedonians do. "To the Macedonians, become a Macedonian, to win the Macedonians." Isn't that the point of going?

1 Corinthians 9: 19-23 - Though I am free and belong to no man, I make myself a slave to everyone, to win as many as possible. To the Jews I became like a Jew, to win the Jews. To those under the law I became like one under the law (though I myself am not under the law), so as to win those under the law. To those not having the law I became like one not having the law (though I am not free from God's law but am under Christ's law), so as to win those not having the law. To the weak I became weak, to win the weak. I have become all things to all men so that by all possible means I might save some. I do all this for the sake of the gospel, that I may share in its blessings.

The past few days have been very productive as far as preparation goes. I'm almost through with my reading assignments for Virginia and have gotten a good jump on my paper. I've begun the Visa process. Did an interview for the commissioning service at Brook Hills, and lastly, I started packing! Praise the Lord!

A few more notes... ginnafay.com will be revamped soon! That will be my official Macedonia update blog. I bought a new camera which will aid in some fun video updates from the field. I am super excited about it! and incase you are interested, I will be commissioned by the Church at Brookhills on July 18. They have three services... 9, 11, and 6. I would love for my friends and family to be there.

I suppose that's it for now.

Macedonia Update

Originally, my plan was to come home for about two weeks between training and leaving for Macedonia. Unofficially, my plans have changed. My partner and I have been invited to leave straight from training. Our team will be ready for us then, and we feel that it would make our transition easier. This was a hard decision to come to, both for us and our families. However, we trust that the Lord has his guiding hand on us. Please be praying for us! I am not counting or anything, but training starts in 2 months and 1 day.  I am so excited about what lies ahead! I will do my best to start coordinating my update list soon! Stay tuned.

Radical Salvation

"[The gospel] ...demands and enables us to turn from our sin, to take up our cross, to die to ourselves, and to follow Jesus. These are the terms and phrases we see in the Bible. And salvation now consists of a deep wrestling in our souls with the sinfulness of our hearts, the depth of our depravity, and the desperation of our need for his grace. Jesus is no longer one to be accepted or invited in but one who is infinitely worthy of our immediate and total surrender... We are saved from our sins by a free gift of grace, something that only God can do in us and that we cannot manufacture ourselves. But that gift of grace involves the gift of a new heart. New desires. New longings. For the first time, we want God. We see our need for him, and we love him. We seek after him, and we find him, and we discover that he is indeed the great reward of our salvation. We realize that we are saved not just to be forgiven of our sins, but we are saved to know God. So we yearn for him. We want him so much that we abandon everything else to experience him. This is the only proper response to the revelation of God in the gospel."  -Radical, David Platt

Cancer of the Soul

I have heard it said that sin is cancer of the soul.
I never fully understood what that meant until I moved in with Keith, Teresa, and Katelynn. For the past ten years, Teresa has been fighting cancer. She's had breast cancer twice, and last year discovered she had brain cancer. In response to her cancer, she has been through several rounds of chemo, full brain radiation, steriotactic radiation, two brain surgeries, and who knows how many other surgeries. The cancer has taken a toll on her body. The hard truth is, unless the Lord intervenes and takes away the cancer, the cancer will take her life.

The most precious thing to me, is the way Keith cares for Teresa. I can't imagine the heartache he must feel for his wife. He knows her better than anyone. He knew her before she walked with the Lord and he knew her before she had cancer. He watched her change from someone who was dead in her sin into someone who was given new life in Christ. He watched her change from someone with a perfectly healthy body into someone who was weakend and disabled by cancer. Her life in Christ and her battle with cancer seem to be oppostites -one a picture of renewal and one a picture of wasting away. The only difference though, is the realm in which they occur. Cancer is a physical picture of a spiritual battle. This spiritual battle occurs within the heart of every human being. It's our battle with sin. Sin truly is cancer of the soul.

For the husband is the
head of the wife as Christ
is the head of the church,
his body, of which he is the Savior.
-Ephesians 5:23

If cancer and sin are the same -one physcial, and one spiritual, I imagine Jesus must feel the same way for his Church as Keith feels for his wife. The Church is Christ's bride like Teresa is Keith's bride. The cancer that is invading Teresa's body is like the sin that is invading Christ's Church, both cause sickness and destruction to the body. The physical body and the body of believers.
Sin is destruction.
As Keith is broken over his wife's sickness, so Christ is broken over our sickness. As Keith, out of his deep love, exhausts himself to protect and care for Teresa, so Christ, out of his deep love, exhausts himself to protect and care for us. The difference there is, Christ exhausted himself to the point of death. The hard truth is, unless you believe that God has intervened and sent Christ to die for your sin, sin will take your life.
Only Christ can bring life.

Therefore we do not lose heart. Though
outwardly we are wasting away, yet
inwardly we are being renewed day by day.
-2 Corinthians 4:16

Basking in His Mercy

I had the priviledge of spending the day with a sweet, new friend. The journeyman going to Macedonia with me came to Birmingham. Hannah is her name. She has such a sweet and gentle countenance. I am excited to see what the Lord has in store for us. I think we will be good friends and I am very thankful for that. Hannah met with a former journeyman to Macedonia a few weeks ago. She gave Hannah a cd of the songs she listened to while she was there. The first song was written by one of her friends after visiting Macedonia. I think the words are beautiful and paint such a great picture of what it will be like:

She sits across the table. Stares in my eyes.
Her whole life, her uncertainty, she's trying to disguise.
How could You move over coffee and words from a sinner's lips and an unknown tongue?
I beg You to move passed my unworthiness, for this could be her only chance.
Only You. Yes, only You can move in me.

As Hannah and I were talking today, we came to the conclusion that our lives are about to change drastically. I think reality has set in a little bit for both of us. We are going to be the outsiders, looked at like we are strange, and undoubtedly struggle understanding what's being said around us. It will not be something we can come home from when it gets tough. That's our life for the next 2 years. It will be a great challenge, but I can't even begin to imagine how amazing the Lord will prove to be. Neither of us planned on going to Macedonia, but it is undeniably from Him. I can't help but bask in His precious mercy today. Oh what joy there is to be found in the presence of the Lord!

Childlike Faith and a Broken Wing

Katelynn is on Spring break this week. We spent most of the morning sitting on the couch watching Spongebob. We were minding our own business when all of a sudden, we heard a loud thud. Something hit the glass door and fell to the ground. It startled us, so we both ran over to the door to see what it was. Lying on the porch was a little, yellow finch. My automatic response was, "Just leave him be, there's nothing we can do for him. He's not going to make it." Katelynn was bound and determined to help the little guy though. She was banging around trying to find her old Hermit Crab cage. Very annoyed, I yelled at her and kept insisting that there was nothing she could do. She was adamant though. She said, "You don't believe that God can heal him and I do, so I am going to help him!"

She put a towel in the cage, some bird seed, then went to get some gloves. I thought, "I might as well help her before she hurts herself, or further injures the poor bird." So, we got the bird in the cage and headed to Petco. We had planned to go to Old Navy so Katelynn could buy clothes with the money she had saved up. However, she decided to buy stuff to help the bird instead. She named him Oscarr De La Hoya. Well, she came up with Oscarr and I came up with De La Hoya. She bought him a heater, some baby bird food, and a syringe. We took him into the garage and got his new living space all situated. Then we held him and fed him out of the little syringe. He would swallow some food, then fling his head around to clean off his beak. He got bird food all over our clothes. It was actually kind of cute. I must say, he is a sweet little bird. He can't fly, but he seems to be okay otherwise.

Oh the lessons I learn from a 12 year old. She has childlike faith, such compassion, and was willing to sacrifice her savings for that helpless little bird. I am glad that while I was flailing around, paralyzed by my sin, the Lord didn't look at me and say, "Just let her be, there's nothing that can be done. She's not going to make it." Instead, he had compassion for me. He sacrificed himself for me. He saved me.

He called a little child and had him stand among them. And he said: "I tell you the truth, unless you change and become like little children, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven. Therefore, whoever humbles himself like this child is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven. -Matthew 18:2-4

The Lord will perfect that which concerns me... Psalm 138:8

Assuming the world is still spinning come October, I will be heading to Macedonia. It is still very surreal. Yesterday, I got an official "welcome" e-mail from the team that is already in Macedonia. Brian and Mandy are the couple that run the coffeehouse. I have been e-mailing back and forth with them for a few weeks now and have asked them all sorts of questions. One being about what the living situation would be like. Brian said that more than likely, I will have an apartment with internet and the amenities will be similar to what I have at home. The only adjustment I might have to make is using electric heaters in the winter because there is no heating system.

Readers, if you knew anything about my living situation last year, this would make you smile. My roommate and I thought it would be a good idea to move into this little old house near campus. It was cute as could be, but it had so many issues. Perhaps one day I will write a post about all of the funny stories that house produced. One issue being, it had no central heating or air. Window units in the summer and electric heaters in the winter. That house was right cold in the winter! So much so, that you could see your breath inside. We avoided showers if at all possible or went to a friends house... getting wet was out of the question. We often asked ourselves "What the heck were we thinking when we decided to move here?" The Lord knew what he had in store! I'm not saying that I am completely prepared for a Macedonian winter, however I don't believe it was a coincidence.

The Lord has been so sweet to me. When I first began filling out the journeyman application and looking at times to go to conference, my sister was in the process of planning her wedding. My biggest concern was that I would leave to go overseas and she would have a baby while I was gone. Well... due to the economic situation I got pushed back, and pushed back. And now, my sister is going to be having a baby in just a few weeks and I get to be there! Another secret concern I had, was that I would go overseas and have kid withdrawels. I love kids so much! Afterall, I have a degree in Elementary Education. As it turns out though, the family I am going to work with has a 2 year old and a 5 month old. How precious is that? I suppose that's all for now.

and the verdict is....

*MACEDONIA*

I am beyond ecstatic! IMB called this morning, and I'm going to Macedonia to work at a coffeehouse and build relationships! Lord willing of course. What are my plans you ask? I go back to Virginia at the end of July for an 8 week training. I imagine my departure date would be within the first couple weeks of October. There will be two other girls going to Macedonia. One will be on my team and the other will be in a city nearby. The girl who will be on my team seems like a really sweet girl. I'm excited about getting to know her. Anyway, I guess that's that for now.

This is a picture of the city.

Piercings and Cultural Experiences

Guess what I did today!

Alex and I have been talking about getting our noses pierced for about two years now. We finally did it today! We went to a place called Kolo Piercing.

It is located in Little 5 Points right outside of Atlanta. Little 5 Points in itself was a cultural experience. All kinds of people hang out there. Very interesting.

Getting the piercing wasn't bad at all! It made my eyes water and I sneezed a few times, but that's about it. Overall, a fun experience.

In case you were wondering...

I finally went to Virginia this past weekend! The question I heard most before I got there was, "Where do you want to go?"or, "Where do you feel called to?" I felt a little silly saying that I had absolutely no idea. To my comfort, I wasn't the only one who didn't know. I talked to several aspiring J people who had no particular preference.

I went into conference being completely open to whatever job description I fit best. Going through all the jobs was a daunting task, because there were around 150 to sort through. On the last night, I finally had to pick my top three choices. I know you are just itching to find out what I put... drum roll please:

#1 - Working in a coffee shop in Macedonia.
#2 - Teaching True Love Waits in South Africa.
#3 - Homeschooling/Mentoring 4 MK's in Russia.
(All of which are open countries... so I am free to tell you about them.)

I won't find out for three weeks what job I get... or if I get a job at all. I will keep you posted!

How did I get here?

(Katelynn's 5th Grade Graduation. May 2009)

God really does work all things together. If you don't believe that, perhaps this will persuade you.

It was about this time last year that I began to struggle balancing my time between school, work, church stuff, and time with friends. I stretched myself so thin that I became physically sick, had daily emotional melt downs, and failed several assignments. (All of which, are very unlike me.) I was driving from Birmingham back to Auburn after being a leader for Delta Flight. Delta Flight is a youth weekend at church where you go nonstop with little to no sleep. I was exhausted in every since of the word. I hit a breaking point and finally realized something had to give. I usually don't pray this way, but this is what I said to the Lord, "If I am supposed to quit my job, show me. Show me what else I am supposed to do. Show me Lord!"

That very night, I was waiting on a classmate to meet me so that we could work on a project. As I waited, I had a very interesting Skype chat with a friend from home. Here is part of our conversation:

[2/15/2009 7:58:59 PM] ginna says: are you there?

[2/15/2009 8:00:09 PM] Josh & Rachel says: yes, how are you??
[2/15/2009 8:01:34 PM] Josh & Rachel says: did you have a good weekend?
[2/15/2009 8:02:07 PM] Josh & Rachel says: i was actually going to email or call you...i have a question for you.

[2/15/2009 8:02:13 PM] ginna says: i am doing well! i am sllllllllllleeeepy.
[2/15/2009 8:02:17 PM] ginna says: what is it?

[2/15/2009 8:02:56 PM] ginna says: and the weekend was really good.

[2/15/2009 8:05:50 PM] Josh & Rachel says: my mom has a friend who now lives in auburn w/ his wife and small kids...she has had cancer and now has a new brain tumor...anyway, they are looking for someone, either young and responsible or even older/retired to help out w/ some errands, etc. I am not sure of all that is needed.

[2/15/2009 8:06:17 PM] Josh & Rachel says: so, my mom asked if i knew of anyone to pass on a name to for them to hire to help them out.

[2/15/2009 8:06:34 PM] ginna says: wow.

[2/15/2009 8:07:46 PM] ginna says: well, i was actually just talking to jesus about the job i have right now. i have worked at a coffee shop for a really long time and i am to a point in school that i am struggling to work and keep up with all that i have to do for school.

[2/15/2009 8:07:59 PM] ginna says: do you have any idea what the time frame would be?
[2/15/2009 8:08:38 PM] ginna says: if it was flexible, then i think i probably could do it.

[2/15/2009 8:08:43 PM] Josh & Rachel says: no, but i could get their # and you could just call and chat w/ them. from what i know of them, they are pretty cool people.

[2/15/2009 8:09:14 PM] Josh & Rachel says: at least call them and see if you could help at all. ??

Rachel couldn't get her mom on the phone that night, but she called me the next day. She asked if she could give my number to her mother (who lives in Indiana, mind you). Of course I said that was fine. She also told me that part of the job would be getting their little girl to and from school. The more I thought about the time frame, the more certain I was that it wouldn't work out. The issues were: I had to be at an elementary school by 7:50 on Tuesday mornings. I had an 8:00 class on Thursdays, and a 3:00 class twice a week.

Since school starts at 8 and ends at 3, there is no way it would work out. Not to mention, I LOVED my job at the coffee shop and the woman I worked for.

When Keith called a few days later, I had already made up my mind that it just wasn't going to work. However, I listened as Keith gave me a run down of what they needed. The main problem they had, was getting Katelynn to and from school.

As it turned out... Katelynn attended the very school I had to be at by 7:50 on Tuesday mornings. She had to be off at school around 7:15 and and picked up around 2:15.

I could not have scheduled a more perfect window of time. When I heard that, my heart started beating in my throat. Then I couldn't help myself from word vomitting. I told Keith all about my emotional break down and how I had been praying about what to do. After I told him all of that, I was certain he thought I was a nut job. I did not know one thing about him. For all I knew, he could have been an athiest and there I was talking to him about what I had prayed for. I remember saying, "I'm not sure why I just decided to tell you that."

I guess he didn't think I was THAT crazy. He decided we would work on scheduling a time to meet. They didn't need help for a few months, so I had plenty of time to talk it over with my boss at the coffee shop. That also meant, I had plenty of time to mull over it all, and doubt that it was from the Lord. (As if it wasn't as clear as a neon sign.)
Anywho... several weeks passed. I was still living a very chaotic life, filled with failed assigments and emotional breakdowns. As I cried to my mother over the phone, she very bluntly told me to quit my job. I was still holding onto it though... afterall, coffee is wonderfully addictive. The next day I went to work. My boss, Trish, asked me if I was getting enough hours. Her very simple question was all it took to turn me into a puddle. I didn't even answer her, I just started crying. It was the ugly cry too; the kind that makes your nose run and your face turn all red. I was a mess. I don't think Trish had ever seen me like that and I imagine it caught her off guard. She took me back to the kitchen and said, "Tell me what you need, short of quitting." I told her about failing my assignments and how my mom told me to quit, even though I didn't want to quit. She gave me a big hug, and even cried with me a little. Then we decided to cut my shifts down to only one shift a week and see how that worked out. (When I started the job, I was working 4 shifts a week. Then I moved down to 3, then down to 2...)

It wasn't but a few days later that I got a call from Teresa. I was actually sitting at the coffee shop doing homework when my cell phone rang. I didn't recognize the number, so I almost didn't answer it. However, at the last minute I decided to answer and walk outside. When she told me who she was, I remember being in awe that I was on the phone with someone who had just gone through radiation and brain surgery. I'm not sure why that was so amazing to me. I guess the fact that she sounded so normal. Anyway, we scheduled to meet at Starbuck's the following Saturday evening. If you know anything about working in the coffee business, you know that Starbuck's is the opposing team. Looking back, what symbolism there is in that. I loved my job at the coffee shop. The Lord used it to mold me and teach me so much. Going to meet Keith, Teresa, and Katelynn was my first step in letting go of something I held so dear.

That next Saturday, I got off work and drove straight to Starbuck's to meet the family for the first time. We sat at a table outside and talked for quite a while. I told them about school and my prospective Journeyman plans. They seemed genuinely interested. They weren't athiest afterall! I say that jokingly, because they are quite the opposite. Both Teresa and Keith are Jesus following believers. Keith works in Georgia, but they chose there home in Auburn based on the church they wanted to plug into. And Katelynn, who was 11 at the time, had recently been baptized. She told me all about it. We got along like peas and carrots (Jenny...). It was a sure deal, so we started making plans. I got in the car to go home and felt the strangest, best feeling. I have never been so sure of anything in all my life. The way God so perfectly wove our lives together is nothing short of amazing. I was a student in Auburn, but knew Rachel from Birmingham, who is the daughter of a woman from Indiana, who knows a family that had recently moved to Auburn.

As all good stories end: The rest is history.

What happened with my job at the coffee shop you ask? I put in my 1 month notice. I went back to the shop that night to work on some lesson plans. I didn't go looking for Trish, but she just so happened to be there. I told her all about meeting that precious family, and how I would be quiting come the end of March. She told me she knew it was coming, and had already been working on finding my replacement. When my last day rolled around at the end of March, it was pretty heart wrenching. At the same time though, I had the greatest since of peace. Trish walked me out as I was leaving. I cried, but she gave me encouragement and affirmation. She told me to take all the effort and time I put in at the coffee shop, and put it into the life of that very precious little girl.

Here I am, almost a year later, and that very precious little girl just so happens to be sleeping in the bed right next to me. A lot has happened in her life over the past year... which is what my next post is going to be about. However, that will just have to wait for another time. Also, don't tell Katelynn I referred to her as little. She might beat me up or something. ;)

The heart is deceitful above all things and beyond cure. Who can understand it?

Why do I constantly seek to fill the silence? The story of Elijah comes to mind. Elijah sought the Lord in the raging wind, in an earthquake, and in fire. Those things are significant events in the eyes of the world; magnificent and terrifying events actually. This is the Lord we’re talking about here, so I imagine these events were catastrophic; Hurricane winds so strong that they could tear down mountains, a fire so consuming that it destroys everything in its path and an earthquake that could open up the ground and swallow an entire city. I imagine that the noise must have been deafening. However, once silence finally settled over the land, the Lord was found to be a gentle whisper. How amazing is that?

The Lord’s voice is undeniable in the silence. Constant sound is my vice; whether it is from music, the television, or even my own voice. Whatever the source of the sound may be, it becomes so loud that it drowns out the Lord. If I don’t hear him, I don’t have to feel His conviction. How convenient! That makes my sinful, selfish desires much more enjoyable. At the same time though, I lose the guidance and stability found in Him. I lose sight of the truth. When I deny Him, my heart is like an unfortified city that is left vulnerable to attack. The enemy is prowling around, ready to devour me. His aim is my destruction. What is his weapon? Lies. He whispers lies to me and makes me believe them. I am convinced that the root of all sin is deceit. And, oh how I am so easily deceived! When I do not cling to the truth, I am lead blindly by whatever takes hold of me. Why am I surprised when I so quickly find myself lost, wondering how I got so far from where I should be?

Jeremiah even says that the heart is deceitful above all things, and is beyond cure. The only one who can understand it is the Lord. He understands us better than we even understand ourselves. He knows our weakness and has given us armor for the battle! What better to combat lies than the truth?

Wounded and forsaken, I was shattered by the fall. Broken and forgotten, feeling lost and all alone. Summoned by the King into the Master's courts. Lifted by the Savior and cradled in His arms. I was carried to the table, seated where I don't belong. Carried to the table, swept away by His love. And I don't see my brokeness anymore when I'm seated at the table of the Lord. I'm carried to the table, the table of the Lord.
